Bird's Love is an independent publishing company that crafts the unimaginable from a child's perspective. Whether it's a picture book or adult fiction, it strives to indulge readers with children and young adult characters of color who offer unique yet forgotten perspectives that are engaging, entertaining, and thought-provoking. Bird’s Love also provides professional editing services for children’s book authors and fun everyday items for creatives.
HOW IT GOT STARTED
Bird's Love started with Ethel M. Balmer (a.k.a. Bird) who wanted to start a greeting card business in 2010. Her passing encouraged her youngest daughter Starr to keep her vision alive; as a result, she developed Bird's Love's first collection of Christmas greeting cards in 2012, which were favored by many. In 2015, Bird's Love joined the publishing world and became an independent publishing company, releasing the well-received children's picture book, "Scary, Scary Sasha".
MEET THE OWNER / AUTHOR / EDITOR
Starr Balmer is the owner of Bird's Love, as well as a talented author, editor, and communications professional with 12 years of editing and writing experience. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism, she has worked in the retail, publishing, marketing, and media industries where she has written and edited news and feature stories, press releases, blogs, social media content, manuscripts, and marketing materials for various audiences.
However, her love for writing started when she was in the fourth grade. Her teacher noticed her writing abilities and placed her stories in the reading area of the classroom so other students could read them. Particularly, her interest in children’s stories developed when she worked as an assistant editor for an educational publisher and reviewed a variety of children’s picture books. As her interest grew, she decided to hone her writing skills and earn a certificate in Writing for Children from California State University, Dominguez Hills. Ultimately, her interest turned into a love for writing children’s stories and a desire to self-publish her picture book, Scary, Scary Sasha. She's also the sole editor of Bird's Love who provides editing services for authors of children's picture books.
